Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a treatment that targets the hair follicle with heat, in order to render it inactive. This treatment does not permanently remove the hair, but rather reduces hair growth on the face or body. It’s more accurately referred to as permanent hair reduction, and is appropriate for all skin types.

How does the laser treatment work?

We use the Sciton BBL (Broad Band Light) system that uses a handheld device to target hair follicles to destroy them, without any damage to the surrounding skin. BBL hair removal diminishes, or removes, unwanted hair from the face and or body.

Your Laser Hair Removal will be administered at Dr. Mark Pogue‘s office in Scottsdale, AZ.

What can I expect during treatment?

During your initial consultation, your aesthetician will review your medical history including any medications you may be taking, known allergies, sun and tanning exposure history, pregnancy history and any medical conditions you may have.

Prior to your treatment, you may be asked if you’d like a topical anesthetic applied to the area being treated. Be sure to discuss this with your aesthetician. You will also be provided with special safety eye wear to wear during your procedure to protect your eyes.

The hair removal process can take anywhere from 5 minutes (for your lip area), to 30-45 minutes for larger areas, like on both legs.

Does it hurt?

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with the laser pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort is minimized by a cooling tip on the device, and also by a device that disperses cold air onto the area.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

For hair removal, most people require at least 6 treatments, maybe more for larger areas of the body and darker skin types, as the process is only effective when the hair follicle is in its active growth phase.

How do I prepare for treatment?

You should avoid electrolysis, tweezing, or waxing for six weeks prior to your treatment. If you have had a history of cold sores and are scheduled for facial hair treatment, an antiviral may be prescribed for you. Also, any hair should be shaved, and your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, or oils on its surface before laser treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

You should avoid sun exposure before and after treatment, and should apply sunblock (SPF 30 or above) when going outdoors.

Are there side effects?

Your risks are minimal. Side effects may include purpura (a laser bruise), redness, blistering, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and swelling in the treated area – these usually do not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects, such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation or scarring, are rare.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

After laser treatment, avoid sun exposure. In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Your aesthetician may advise additional precautions.
