Eyelid lift surgery can correct sagging eyelids, pouches beneath the eyes and excess folds around the eyes. This surgical procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat on the upper and lower eyelids and is often done in conjunction with other facial cosmetic surgery procedures, including facelift and brow lift.
Before Surgery
Prior to your surgical procedure, a complete medical history is taken to evaluate your general health. Dr. Pogue will conduct a thorough examination of the eyes and face to determine the most effective surgical approach. The amount, type, and distribution of excess skin are carefully noted. During your consultation, Dr. Pogue will go over the anesthesia to be used, the procedures, what results you can reasonably expect, and the possible risks and complications of the surgery. An examination by an ophthalmologist may be recommended. The areas to be treated will be marked, and photographs are usually taken before and after surgery in order to evaluate the final results.
Eyelid Surgery
- Following the skin’s natural lines and creases, very fine incisions are made from the inner to the outer edge of the eyelid. In selected cases, incisions are made inside the eyelid.
- An incision is made on the fold of the upper eyelid.
- On the lower eyelid, the incision is made directly below the eyelash or in the pink lining of the inner eyelid (the conjunctive).
- Excess skin and fat are then removed from the underlying compartments. The amount of fat removed is determined by the degree of protrusion of fat when gentle pressure is applied to the area.
<.li>Small sutures are used to close the incision and ointments may be applied.
The procedure can take from one to two hours, depending on the extent of surgery.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Antibiotic eye drops may be continued for several days after eye surgery. Sutures are removed at five days. Some swelling and bruising occur but usually subsides within a week. Eye makeup may be applied ten to fourteen days after the eye surgery, but the area must be thoroughly cleansed after each use. Dr. Pogue will determine when normal activities can resume, but strenuous exercise must be avoided for two weeks after surgery.
Complications from eyelid surgery can include excessive drying of the eyes, which can be alleviated through medication. There may also be some sensitivity to bright light and wind. Numbness and itching may occur during the healing process.
